Country store photos

Photos from Carey’s General Store from the early 1940s. Operated at the time of these photos by E. Edward Carey, Sr.  E. Edward (Ned) Carey, Jr. is pictured in a photo at the upper right, having been recently discharged from the Army Air Force. He was released early in order that he could assist his mother, Bessie Johnson Carey, with the operation of the store, following a heart attack suffered by his father.  He later operated the store in partnership with Howard Smith.  When the partnership was dissolved some time later, Ned continued to operate the business with his wife, Beatrice.  In 1953, they opened Carey’s Paint & Hardware on State Street in town and sold the country store to Harold and Myrtle Mumford.
